Nur im Okzident (Only in the Western World)

According to the German philosopher Max Weber (1864-1920), rationality is a uniquely European phenomenon. This exhibition aims to question the Eurocentrism inherent in Max Weber’s expression “nur im Okzident” by showing works by critical artists unmasking the darker side of this famed rationality – as colonialist, racialized, and predatory. The works thus enact a multiplicity of strategies to claim a different reading of history and rationality. In this way, the artists frame their own ancestry and roots for themselves, opening an increased space for freedom, knowledge and empowerment.
