ISOLE MINORI
MUSEI CIVICI CAGLARI
JUNE 26 – NOVEMBER 16, 2025

The monumental installation by Gbré dedicated to Sardinia is composed of 70 small-format photographs and originate from the artist’s stay on the island in 2018 for a commission by Museo MAN, supported by the Sardegna Film Commission. This residency led to his solo exhibition at the Nuoro museum the same year, titled Sogno d’oltremare. On this occasion, the Franco-Ivorian artist reverses the typical “Western gaze”, observing the Sardinian territory from a perspective that allows him to discover and propose, through analogies and similarities, a visual dialogue between Sardinia and African cities such as Abidjan, Bamako, or Dakar. The inspiration came from the discovery of a historical map of the island, preserved in the State Archives of Nuoro, which appears on paper rotated from the usual North-South orientation we are accustomed to. This archival find prompts the artist to shift his perspective on the rural landscape, offering an opportunity to reflect on shared histories of land exploitation, colonialism, and the abandonment of economic and cultural sites, linking African and Mediterranean landscapes through a common narrative of places marked by subalternity.
